Asking Questions: A Truly Godly Approach to Counseling

Good counselors ask great questions. To find a bibilcal model we do not need to look far for God questions humans within the first four chapters of the Bible. God is the perfect counselor and he does it through questions. Think about this:

In Genesis God asks these questions:

3:11 – Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree which I commanded you not to eat?

3:13  - What is this that you have done?

4:6  - Why are you angry and why is your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted?

4:9 – Where is Abel your brother?

4:10 – What have you done?

In five verses we get eight heart penetrating questions. Some of them are yes and no, some of them are not but all of them are getting at the heart!

For more heart penetrating questions look at these “X-Ray Questions” by David Powlison

Let’s ask these of ourselves before we ask them of others so that we are not identifying specs and missing logs (Matt 7:1-5).
